Somewhere along the way, storytelling became a template. Content creators, brands, even individuals started flattening their narratives into predictable arcs. Hook, problem, solution, call-to-action — rinse and repeat.
At the same time, algorithms reward the same repetitive forms. AI tools accelerate it. And in the process, the agency to tell complex, contradictory, and deeply human stories is slipping away.
How Narrative Became Predictable
From growth-hacked LinkedIn posts to influencer reels, we’ve been trained to “deliver value” in 30 seconds or less.
This isn’t inherently wrong, but it comes at a cost:
- nuance is filtered out
- messy context is ignored
- a single “key message” takes over
When every narrative has to compete on clarity and scale, agency — the freedom to shape and reshape meaning — starts to suffocate.
The Role of AI
Generative AI models, for all their benefits, also drive this trend further.
They finish stories for us.
They predict what “should” come next.
They nudge us toward more predictable outcomes.
In other words, they become co-authors of a new kind of narrative standardization.
Why Agency Matters
When we talk about agency, we talk about the freedom to change your story:

- to shift perspectives
- to adapt to new truths
That freedom is foundational to authentic communication. It is how culture evolves.
If we allow algorithms — or even our own optimization habits — to squeeze that freedom out, we aren’t just losing personal expression. We’re losing the ability to reimagine what’s possible.
So…Who’s Pulling the Plug?
It’s easy to blame the platforms, or the models, or “the system.” But the truth is, we co-create this dynamic. We pull the plug on narrative agency every time we:
- chase performance over honesty
- polish away complexity
- train audiences to expect the simplest version of our stories
We are participants in our own erasure.
